The Basics of Getting Started as a Drug Free Workplace…
- Identify the state(s) in which you have employees and verify if those states have any rules, regulations and/or guidelines associated with a Drug Free Workplace.
- Identify if your organization is subject to any federal drug and alcohol program requirements due to contractual obligations, grant funding and/or commercial driver’s license requirements.
- Establish a formal company policy that will define who can be tested, when they can be tested, what happens when you have a positive result, how testing will be conducted and how you are going to train your employees and supervisors.
Our Drug Free Workplace Programs are designed with Simplicity for Ease of Implementation
The 3 preliminary steps above may seem like a lot of work, however, The Council on Alcohol and Drugs is a 49 year old non-profit focused on helping businesses set up, maintain and certify their drug free workplace with the state(s) in which their business operates.

Drug Free Workplace
The nominal costs of establishing a drug-free workplace program should always be weighed against the high risks of not having a program in place. For many employers, one serious accident, one major financial problem, one breach of confidentiality or one troubled employee can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and even jeopardize a company’s financial future. Take a look at the recent news headlines to see how one catastrophic event such as a vehicle accident or a building collapse can cripple a company’s reputation and financial status in the blink of an eye. Can your company really afford not to have a drug-free policy in place?
Drug Testing Kits
In many states, Drug Free Workplace laws allow the use of an onsite, rapid result drug test for certain testing situations such as pre-employment, random and blanket testing. There is a significant cost-savings when implementing onsite instant testing for even one category of testing. Non-negatives are always confirmed through a lab process and Medical Review Officer (MRO) review is highly encouraged, if not required. Understanding the benefits of testing options can be extremely valuable to your organization. Contact one of our testing professionals to help you evaluate the options available in the state(s) you operate.
